Where the mind is without fear
and the head is held high Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not
been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls Where words come out fromt
the depth of truth
Where tireless striving
stretches its arms towards perfection Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom,
my Father, let my country awake.
Summary: The poem 'Where the mind is without Fear' is a poem written by Rabindranath Tagore where he expresses the concept of freedom. They say that a fear-free life is the right of every living being.
The circumstances of life should be such that a person can walk with his head held high. If a man cannot walk with his head raised then it means there is no freedom. The poet says that education is the right of every human being, it brings life out of the darkness of conservative thoughts .
The poet invalidates the dividers of race, colour, class, caste and creed, as these hinder human development. Poets dislike false speech and lies, because they cause controversy, truth is supreme.
They also invalidate the complacency mentality. For Tagore, freedom means a continuous and tireless effort to achieve perfection. Man has been blessed with divine wisdom. Conscience is like a stream, which flows completely clean and continuously. Man should not be a slave to orthodox dead practices because these are like a stream that ends up in the desert sand. We must surrender ourselves to God to attain the 'heaven of freedom'. With this sentiment, the poet prays to God to keep our country free from these vices.
हिन्दी सारांश : कविता 'जहाँ मन भयमुक्त हो' रवीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर जी की लिखी एक अनुपम कृति है जहां वे स्वतंत्रता की धारणा को अभिव्यक्त करते है। वे कहते है की भय मुक्त जीवन प्रत्येक जीव का अधिकार है। जीवन की परिस्थितियाँ ऐसी होनी चाहिए कि मनुष्य सिर उठाकर चल सके। यदि मनुष्य सिर उठाकर नहीं चल सकता तो इसका अर्थ है स्वतंत्रता नहीं है। कवि कहते है की शिक्षा प्रत्येक मनुष्य का अधिकार है ये जीवन को रूढ़िवादी विचारो के अंधकार से बाहर निकलता है अज्ञानता, अगीनता है। कवि नस्ल, रंग, वर्ग, जाति और पंथ के विभाजकों को अमान्य करते हैं, क्योंकि ये मनुष्य के विकास में रुकावट डालते हैं। कवि असत्य भाषण और झूठ को नापसन्द करते हैं, क्योंकि ये विवाद का कारण बनते हैं , सत्य सर्वोपरी हैं। वे आत्मतुष्टि की मानसिकता को भी अमान्य करते हैं। टैगोर के लिये स्वतंत्रता के मायने हैं- पूर्णता की प्राप्ति के लिए एक अनवरत् और अथक प्रयास। मनुष्य को दिव्य विवेक का वरदान मिला हुआ है। विवेक एक ऐसी धारा के समान है, जो एकदम निर्मल व सतत बहती है। मनुष्य को रूढ़िवादी मृत प्रथाओं का गुलाम नहीं होना चाहिए क्योंकि ये उसी प्रकार हैं जैसे एक धारा जो मरुस्थल की रेत में समा जाती है। हमें 'स्वतंत्रता के स्वर्ग' को पाने के लिए स्वयं को परमात्मा के हवाले कर देना चाहिए। इसी भाव के साथ कवि ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करते हैं कि वे हमारे देश को इन दुर्गुणों से मुक्त रखें।
