Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though
he will nit see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My Little horse must think it queer
to stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
the only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
the woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep ,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Summary :-
The poem is a pastoral poem that begins as a simple composition but attains sublem thoughts by the end. The theme of this poem is a journey, and not simply a journey through the woods but perhaps through life itself. There is an expectant tone throughout the poem . the author stops for a brief time to meditate and realizes he needs to continue on his journey through the woods and his journey through life. Forest's famous phrase "And miles to go before I sleep " not only referes to the physical distance of the trip but also that he still has a long life ahead of him. Sleep often symbolizes death, and the poet wishes to enjoy the beauties around but his immediate duties do not allow him that indulgency . Frost said "A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom.
सारांश :- यह कविता एक पास्टोरल कविता है, जो शुरुवात में साधारण यात्रा का वर्णन करती है, पर इसकी अंतिम चार पंक्तियाँ जीवन के गहन दर्शन को व्यक्त करती हैं। कविता का प्रसंग यात्रा है। परन्तु यह कोई जंगल की साधारण यात्रा नहीं है वरन जीवन की यती है। पूरी कविता मै आशावादी सुर है। कवी अपनी यात्रा के बीच में कुछ पल के लिए प्रकृति के सौंदर्य को देखने के लिए रुकता है, पर शीघ्र ही उसे लगता है क़ि उसे अभी बहुत राष्ट तय करना है , वह इस तरह बीच में नहीं रुक सकता। फ्रॉस्ट का यह वाक्यांश "Miles to go before I sleep" न केवल यात्रा की प्रत्यक्छ दूरी को बताता है वरन शेष बचे जीवन की ओर भी इंगित करता है। निद्रा , मृत्यु की प्रतीक है। कवि कहता है की अपनी मृत्यु से पहले अभी उसे बहुत - से लक्ष्य पाने हैं। कवी चारों तरफ की सुंदरता का आनंद लेना चाहता है पर उसके कर्त्तव्य उसे रूककर प्रकृति की छटा निहारने की अनुमति नहीं देते। फ्रॉस्ट कहते हैं की "कविता आनन्द की अनुभूति से आरम्भ होती है तथा इसका अंत बौद्धिक है। "

Ans. In the poem "stopping by woods " poet is riding on a horse. while passing the forest on a dark winter evening the poet stops to watch the snow falling in the woods. He enjoys the beauty of the falling snow , but after sometime he remembers the obligation. He is in dilema. Woods are beautiful and tempting but his duties are calling him . He hesitates for a while during the journey and then keeps moving.
इस कविता में कवी घोड़े पर सवार है। गहरी ठंडी शाम को जंगल से गुजरते हुए कवी अचानक रुक जाता है और जंगल में हो रही वर्फबारी को देखता रहता है। वह उस बर्फ का आनंद उठाने लगता है , परन्तु कुछ समय पश्चात उसे अपनी जिम्मेदारियों का अहसास होता है। वह दुविधाक में रहता है। जंगल बहुत ही खूबसूरत एवं ललचाने वाला था।, परन्तु उसके कर्त्तव्य उसे बुला रही थय। वह कुछ समय के लिए हिचकिचाता है , फिर अपनी यात्रा शुरू कर देता है।
2. Consider Robert frost as a nature poet.
Ans. Frost's use of nature is the single element of his poetry . His poems are often pastoral and deal with rural life . Symbolism , regionalism, spirit of democracy, love for nature and love for man are main characteristics of his poetry . Images like woods , stars , horse and brooks are taken from everyday life and used beautifully by him to express life's philosophy in an emotional manner.
रॉबर्ट फ्रॉस्ट की कविताओं में प्राकृतिक का वर्णन एक प्रमुख्य तत्त्व के रूप में उपस्थित होता है। उनकी कविता में मुख्यतयः देहाती एवं ग्रामीण परिवेश का वर्णन होता है। उनकी कविताओं की विशेषताओं में प्रतीकात्मकता , लोकतंत्र की छेत्रीयतावादी छाया , प्रकृति के प्रेम एवं मानवजाति के प्रति प्रेम, प्रमुख्य है। जंगल, टारे, घोड़े, झरने, बर्फबारी आदि छबियाँ दैनिक जीवन से ले गई है, एवं इस जीवन दर्शन को भावुक तरीके से बड़े ही खूबसूरत अंदाज में प्रस्तुत किया गया है।

4. Explain the concluding four lines of the poem.
Ans. Last four lines of the poem, are based on philosophy of life. The first two lines "the woods are lovely ...........promises to keep", describe that forest is quite beautiful and tempting. Snowfall is quite enjoyable but poet must fulfil the commitment , he has to complete the promises. In last two lines "And miles to go before I sleep" says that he has a long life ahead of him with many things to do before he will sleep the sleep of death. before death he wants to fulfil all the work and duties. These lines are philosophical in nature.
कविता की अंतिम चार पंक्तियाँ जीवन दर्शन पर आधारित है। शुरूआती दो पंक्तियाँ हमें बताती है जंगल बहुत ही खूबसूरत एवं ललचाने वाला है। बर्फ़बारी से कवि को बहुत आनंद प्राप्त हो रहा है। परन्तु कवि को अपनी जिम्मेदारियाँ एवं वचन को निभाना है। अंतिम दो पंक्तियाँ बताती है की उसके सामने सारी जिंदगी है जिसमे उसे बहुत सारे काम करना है , वह भी मृत्यु निद्रा के पहले करना है। मृत्यु के पहले वह अपने सरे कार्यों एवं जिम्मेदरियो को पूर्ण करना चाहता है। यह पंक्तियाँ जीवन दर्शन को प्रदर्शित करती है।
5. Describe briefly the symbolic significance of the poem.
Ans. On the surface, this poem is simplicity itself. The poet is crossing the woods on a snowy evening. He enjoys the beauty of the nature and templed to stay longer but his duties recall him for moving ahead . This poem has a symbolic significance that life is full a temptations. We cannot stop ourselves on one point . Everyone has to reach or fulfil his aim of life . his or her obligations may be different but before death everyone needs to perform the long journey.
सतही तौर पर कविता सादगीपूर्ण लगती है। कवि एक बर्फीली शाम को जंगल पार कर रहा है , वह जंगल की खूबसरती की तरफ आकर्षित होकर लम्बे समय तक रुकना चाहता है , परन्तु उसकी जिम्मेदारियां उसे अगर बढ़ने के लिए मजबूत करती है। यहाँ पर कविता में प्रतीकात्मकता ध्वनीत होती है। जीवन आकर्षक व् लालायित करने वाली चीजों से भरा हुआ है , किन्तु हम किसी भी स्थान पर अपने आपको रोक नहीं सकते है। हर व्यक्ति को अपने जीवन के लक्ष्य को पूरा करना है, उसके कर्त्तव्य विभिन्न हो सकती है , परन्तु मृत्यु के पूर्व हर किसी को कर्तव्यों की म लम्बी यात्रा को पूर्ण करना होता है।
