("Night Of The Scorpion" Poem/Summary and more(हिंदी अनुवाद)

Poem:-

I remember the night my mother

was stung by a scorpion.

Ten hours of steady rain had driven him

to crawl beneath a sack of rice.

Parting with his poison-flash

of diabolic tail in the dark room.

he risked the rain again.

The peasants came like swarms of flies and buzzed the name of God a hundred times

to paralyse the Evil One.

With candles and with lanterns

throwing giant scorpion shadows

on the mud-baked walls

They searched for him: he was not found.

They clicked their tongues.

With every movement that the scorpion made his poison moved in

Mother's blood, they said.

May he sit still, they said

May the sins of your previous birth

be burned away tonight, they said. the misfortunes of your next birth, they said.

May your suffering decrease

May the sum of all evil

balanced in this unreal world

against the sum of good become diminished by your pain.

May the poison purify your flesh

of desire, and your spirit of ambition, they said, and they sat around

on the floor with my mother in the centre,

the peace of understanding on each face.

More candles, more lanterns, more neighbours,

more insects, and the endless rain My mother twisted through and through.

groaning on a mat.

My father, sceptic, rationalist,

trying every curse and blessing. powder, mixture, herb and hybrid.

He even poured a little paraffin

upon the bitten toe and put a match to it.

I watched the flame feeding on my mother.

Summary:-

'Night of the Scorpion' is a wonderful poem by Nissim Ezekiel, taken from the famous anthology 'The Exact Name'.

In the present poem, the author has presented a scene showing the difference between superstition and real knowledge in rural India.in which the poet states that.....I still remember the night my mother was bitten by a scorpion. Ten hours of incessant rain had chased away the scorpion which was crawling under the sack of rice in the dark room carrying poison in its devilish tail.

Hearing this, the surrounding people (farmers) came like a swarm of flies with candles and lanterns in hand and started searching for the scorpion on the mud walls and everywhere with the help of candles, but could not find the scorpion. According to the people, with every movement of the scorpion, the poison will spread in the blood. All the villagers sat around the mother and she was asked to take the name of God a hundred times, people told the mother that it was the sin of their previous births, their bad luck, and started saying different things.

Everyone showed understanding by lighting more lanterns, more candles so that this incident does not happen to anyone again in the rain.

My mother was moaning in pain due to the sting of a scorpion. On one hand everyone was giving different advice, on the other hand my father was skeptical, rationalist, trying to treat him with all kinds of herbs, powders, medicines, They also put some paraffin on the leg wound and put a matchstick, I saw the flame burning on my mother's leg, But nothing worked then after full 20 hours mother got relief from pain. The poet's mother expressed her gratitude to the Lord and said that it was good that the scorpion did not bite her or any member of her family or her children. In this way this poem ended with affection.
