Ivan Dmitrievich Aksionov lived in the Russian city of Vladimir with his wife and young children. He is a successful businessman. One summer, when Aksyonov goes to the fair to sell his goods, his wife warns him not to go, because he had a nightmare in which Aksyonov returned after many years with white hair.
On his way to the city, Aksionov meets a fellow merchant, they become friends and they stop for the night at an inn, their rooms are next to each other. Aksionov gets up before dawn and takes his horses and coachman and sets off towards the city. After twenty-five miles, he stops to graze his horses.
Meanwhile, two police officers arrive and ask Aksionov about his relationship with the merchant he met the previous night, as the merchant was found dead. Since the two rooms were next to each other, it seemed only natural that Aksionov would know something. When the officer searches his luggage and pulls out a blood-stained knife, Aksionov trembles with fear.
The police arrest Aksionov and take him to jail. His wife visits him in jail and faints on seeing him in the guise of a criminal. He says they should give the petition to the judge. His wife asks him if he has committed the murder, thinking that his wife also suspects him, Aksionov weeps. Then he thinks that after he goes to jail, only God knows his truth and he will appeal to get justice for him.
He leaves it all to God and accepts his punishment. He is sent to work in the Siberian mines, where at twenty-six, he turns into a pious old man. His hair turns grey, his beard grows long, he can hardly walk and never laughs. He always prays to God for his justice. With the other inmates, he develops a reputation as a mild-mannered and fair man.
One day a new prisoner named Makar Semyonich, who is Aksionov's age, arrives at the prison. Yet, after being convicted, he is imprisoned. While he had absconded after committing some crime earlier also. Aksionov suspects that this is the man responsible for getting him in jail. He secretly questions Semyonich, thereby confirming Aksionov's suspicions. Aksionov begins to remember all that he has lost and, drowning in grief, begins to search for a way to take revenge.
Two weeks later, Aksionov sees Semyonich digging a tunnel under his shelf. Aksionov sneaks into the prison and tries to tell everyone, Semyonich angrily tries to make Aksionov escape and threatens to kill him if he tells the authorities about the tunnel. Aksionov says that Semyonich has already taken his life, now he will do as God instructs him.
The soldiers find the tunnel the very next day. The Governor comes to interrogate the prisoners, none of whom admit to knowing anything about the tunnel. Struggling with his desire for revenge, Aksionov does not tell anyone that he is responsible for the punishment he has already suffered.
That night, Aksionov is about to fall asleep on his cot when Semyonitch sits down beside him, bends down and, in a low voice, begs for forgiveness. He confesses that he killed the other businessman and stole his money. Then he hid the knife near Aksionov so that Aksionov would become guilty. He begins to beg for forgiveness on his knees, promising to confess his crimes so that Aksionov will be free. Old Aksionov replies that his life is already over and he has nowhere to go.
Seeing Semyonich's tears, Aksionov himself begins to cry. Aksionov tells him that God will forgive him, and perhaps he himself is a hundred times worse. Having said this, Aksionov feels lightness in his body. Aksionov no longer wishes to go home or leave prison, he only waits for his last breath.
Semyonich confesses his crimes to the governor, and the officials arrange for Aksionov's release. However, Aksionov dies before the release order can be implemented.

शहर जाते वक्त रास्ते में, एक्सिओनॉव की मुलाकात एक साथी व्यापारी से होती है, उन दोनो की दोस्ती हो जाती है वे रात गुजारने के लिए एक सराय में रुकते है ,दोनो के कमरे एक दूसरे के बगल में ही होते है । एक्सिओनॉव भोर से पहले उठता है और अपने घोड़ों और कोचवान को लेकर शहर की ओर चल देता है पच्चीस मील के बाद, वह अपने घोड़ों को चराने के लिए रुकता है।
इस दौरान, दो पुलिस और अधिकारी वहा आते हैं और एक्सिओनॉव से उस व्यापारी के साथ उसके संबंधों के बारे में पूछते हैं जिससे वह पिछली रात मिला था, क्योंकि वह व्यापारी मृत पाया गया था। चूंकि दोनों कमरे एक-दूसरे के बगल में थे, इसलिए यह स्वाभाविक ही लगता है कि एक्सिओनोव को कुछ पता होगा। जब अधिकारी उसके सामान की तलाशी लेता है और खून से सना चाकू निकालता है, एक्सिओनॉव डर से कांपने लगता है। पुलिस एक्सिओनॉव गिरफ्तार कर लेती है और जेल में ले जाती हैं। उसकी पत्नी जेल में उससे मिलने आती है और अपराधी के वेश में उसे देखकर बेहोश हो जाती है। वह कहता है कि उन्हें जज को याचिका देनी चाहिए। उसकी पत्नी उससे पूछती है कि क्या उसने हत्या की है, उसकी पत्नी भी उस पर संदेह करती है, यह सोचकर एक्सिओनॉव रो देता है। तब वह सोचता है कि उसके जेल जाने के बाद, केवल भगवान ही उसकी सच्चाई जानता है और वही उसे इंसाफ दिलाने के लिए अपील करेगा।

अगले ही दिन सैनिक सुरंग को खोज लेते है। गवर्नर कैदियों से पूछताछ करने आता है, जिनमें से कोई भी कैदी यह स्वीकार नहीं करता के वह सुरंग के बारे में कुछ भी जानते है । बदला लेने की अपनी इच्छा के साथ संघर्ष करने के बाद, एक्सियोनॉव किसीसे भी यह नही कहता के वही उसकी सजा का जिम्मेदार है भले इसकी सजा वह भुगत चुका है।
उस रात, एक्सिओनॉव अपनी चारपाई पर सोने ही वाला होता है कि सेम्योनिच उसके पास बैठ जाता है वह झुकता है और धीमे स्वर में, क्षमा की याचना करता है। वह कबूल करता है की उसीने दूसरे व्यापारी को मारा था और उसके पैसे चुरा लिए थे। फिर उसने चाकू एक्सिओनॉव के पास छुपा दिया था ताकि एक्सिओनॉव गुनहगार बन जाए। वह अपने घुटनों पर बैठकर क्षमा की भीख मांगने लगता है, अपने अपराधों को स्वीकार करने का वादा करता है ताकि एक्सिओनोव आज़ाद हो जाए। बूढ़ा एक्सिओनॉव जवाब देता है कि उसका जीवन पहले ही खत्म हो चुका है अब उसे कहीं नहीं जाना है। सेम्योनिच के आँसुओं को देखकर एक्सिओनोव स्वयं रोने लगता है। एक्सिओनॉव उसे कहता है कि भगवान उसे माफ कर देंगे, और शायद वह खुद सौ गुना बुरा है। यह कहने के बाद, एक्सिओनॉव को अपने शरीर में हल्कापन महसूस होता है। एक्सिओनॉव अब घर जाने या जेल छोड़ने की इच्छा नहीं रखता है, वह केवल अंतिम सांस की प्रतीक्षा करता है।
सेम्योनिच ने गवर्नर के सामने अपने सारे गुनाह कबूल कर लेता है और अधिकारी एक्सिओनोव की रिहाई की व्यवस्था करते हैं। हालांकि, रिहाई के आदेश को लागू होने से पहले एक्सिओनॉव की मृत्यु हो जाती हैं।
